The American law world lost a member on the same day that the jazz world gained a great musician for good. The crossroads, finalised in 1991, could have been a tale foretold as the young Joshua was not only hugely talented, but had also been exposed to an unimaginable number of hours of music of all genres (Coltrane, Rollins, The Beatles, The Police, Prince and so on) by his father, Dewey Redman, a saxophonist who played alongside Ornette Coleman. His intention, however, was not to become a professional musician. Chance or perhaps the spirit of the sharps and flats led him to the stages of the New York jazz scene, where he soon began to gig with some of the leading musicians of his generation, such as Peter Bernstein, Roy Hargrove, Mark Turner etc. Five months after moving to New York, he won the Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, and he began to share the stage with great jazz masters, such as his father, and Charlie Haden, Elvin Jones, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny. It is with the latter that he recorded his second album “Wish“ (Warner Bors, 1993) which also features Haden and Billy Higgins. It is quite clear that his “wish” had come true. The following year was a sign of things to come as Brad Mehldau, Christian Mc Bride and Brian Blade joined him to create an incredibe quartet. Since then, he has proved to have no close competitor and all the steps he takes consolidate his career even further. In 1998, he created a jazz heaven by reuniting his second stable quartet, made up by the musicians you will have the privilige to listen to within our Season: an incredible ensemble to accompany a saxophonist who will make your skin tingle. Overwhelming creativity, technical brilliance, exquisite smoothness and absolute surrender. What you have in front of you is a classic of the genre, undoubtedly. Did the US really need another lawyer, anyway?
