The 1906 range of beers has become consolidated as one of the most awarded in international contests. On this occasion, it has triumphed at the World Beer Challenge 2015, which hosts the International Brewery Awards annually. At these awards, held in Estoril, the dark lager 1906 Black Coupage, the latest addition to the 1906 range, was a winner by obtaining the Gold Medal with top marks in the contest, 98 points out of 100, beating the other 481 beer brands from all over the world that were taking part. This award, given by international experts from the sector, is important recognition for the quality and taste of this recently-launched beer, characterised in the tasting by “its toasted aromas, a pronounced and long-lasting bitterness on the tongue with smoky, wooden hints and nuances of liquorice and cocoa”. The other two beers in the range also won awards at this edition: 1906 Reserva Especial came very close to 1906 Black Coupage by also winning a gold medal, and obtaining 97 points that reward “its intense bitterness and balance with a white froth that remains in the glass from beginning to end”. 1906 Red Vintage obtained a Silver Medal with 81 points, acknowledging its “unique character, with subtle hints of caramel and coffee that finish on floral notes reminiscent of hops”.
