The 1906 Jazz Season closes its eighth edition with a jazz marathon

The eighth edition of the 1906 Jazz Season reaches its end on the 19 June, 19.06, and it will celebrate it with everybody by paying homage to Music Day with an open air marathon open to the public in the emblematic Plaza de la Quintana in Santiago de Compostela.

Our 1906 beer has once again enticed renowned jazz formations out of the traditional jazz clubs to take part on 19 June in a 12-hour, non-stop street music event. The closeness and interaction with the public are two of the keys to understanding the success of this initiative during these last few years when both citizens and tourists have been surprised by the great talent of the artists on the street.

On this occasion, the music will begin at midday in the Plaza de la Quintana and will continue until midnight. The protagonists will be

Roberto Somoza Trío, Felipe Villar Trío, Kin García Trío, Mónica de Nut, Cats and Monkeys, André Fernandes and Los Hot Chocolates.

The jazz marathon in Santiago de Compostela is the grand finale of this edition of the 1906 Jazz Season during which jazz fans have been able to enjoy 50 concerts in 12 venues throughout the country during the last three months.

Names such as Al Foster, Dave Douglas, Chano Domínguez, Antonio Serrano, Gorka Benítez, Pablo Seoane and Xan Campos, among many others, have performed on the stages of some of the most representative clubs and theatres in Spain, making this Season an unmissable date for jazz lovers in Spain.

19.06- Edición 2014

The Jazz Marathon in Plaza de la Quintana will begin at midday with the Roberto Somoza Trio, saxophonist, composer and music arranger that has performed on many different stages all over Europe and collaborated with renowned artists such as Antonio Cal, Baldo Martínez and Lucio Godoy.

Next, the guitarist Felipe Villar will perform at 1.30pm, one of the classic musicians on the Galician jazz scene, who has played with bands such as the Alberto Vilas Quinteto or Rua da Alegría and who, in addition, has his own trio and quartet.

In the afternoon, 4.30pm, the performance will be by the Kin García Trío, considered one of the key names on the Galician music scene. He collaborates in numerous projects and is the leader of the big-band of the jazz department in the Conservatorio Superior de Música of A Coruña, having shared a stage with international stars such as Rosario Giulanni, Steve Brown and Walter White.

After that, it will be the turn of Mónica de Nut, who will play at 6pm. Mónica de Nut sings accompanied by the guitarist Virxilio da Silva, Marcelo Dobode on traditional percussion and Javi GDjazz on trumpet and flugelhorn. The singer still champions the combination of classical music, jazz, rock and Galician tradition.

At 7.30 pm, the protagonists will be Cats and Monkeys, an ensemble that come together in funk, r’n’b and acid-jazz. This group gathers ten musicians with very diverse influences, and highlights the privileged voice of their front woman Toño Otero.

As night draws in, at 9.30pm, André Fernandes will perform; a guitarist that has won the Stephen Holland Award for Outstanding Musicianship. His album Cubo was voted, in 2007, as the best jazz album in Portugal and, in that same year, he was chosen as musician of the year by the prestigious magazine, Público.

Los Hot Chocolates will be in charge of the grand finale with their concert at 10.30pm. The band has its roots in the summer of 2013, when old favourites from the Coruña music scene got together. With a festive show, their concerts are characterised for transmitting the energy and positivity of traditional jazz, and the fun of swing.
