The SON ESTRELLA GALICIA programme returns with force after summer with a proposal of the highest quality. During the next few months, names such as Irma Thomas, The Sadies, Sidonie, Josh Rouse (winner of a Goya in 2014), Niños Mutantes and The Rubinoos will be just some of the artists that will fill some of the most emblematic venues in Spain. In addition to providing continuity to consolidated seasons like American Autumn or Voces Femeninas (Feminine Voices), and celebrations like the 15th anniversary of the great Mardi Gras venue, the calendar is full of interesting proposals for music and beer lovers. And that’s not all, Estrella Galicia promises further surprises until the end of the year by adding new names to the line-up.

French Films return to present their new songs after the success of their second album, “White Orchid”, which is full of short tracks that move between indie pop and post-punk taking The Jesus and Mary Chain or The Pastels as references, linking this Finnish band directly to groups like The Drums or The Vaccines.

As soon as their first single was released in 2006, they were signed up by Domino Records. Straight to one of the most prestigious indie labels. “Present Tense”, released in February this year, is their most complete album. A record that laughs and cries, that detests itself and a second later loves itself. It has been described as affiliated pop, containing political commentary, brutally honest, a treaty made up of eleven demanding songs, without the top coat of superficiality, in which Billy Bragg and the best of The xx shake hands.

The New York band Woods return with their acclaimed “With Light and With Love”, presenting it at El Sol on 13 September. The group from Madrid built around the composer and singer Nacho Ruiz, creates pop songs with pianos, guitars and any other instrument they can get their hands on. Some are of the opinion that the songs seem to be taken from the soundtrack of a yet unmade film. Nine Stories will be in Madrid as part of a tour that includes concerts in and outside Spain, including ten dates in China, while they prepare their third album.

Tórtel is the name under which Jorge Perez (Valencia) works. His third album, “La Gran Prueba” (2014), was recorded and mixed in Valencia. In recent years, Tinariwen has become a cult group that excites and attracts followers from further afield than world music fans. However, this band from Mali is not a recent arrival onto the music scene. Their origins can be traced to the early eighties, when the guitarist Ibrahim Ag Alhabib got together with other musicians that were fighting in the Tuareg revolution, and with whom he shared a desire to open up the tradition of African music to high voltage Western influences.

Pere Ubu is one of the best examples of artistic integrity that rock has given us. Formedin 1975, and with the reverent figure of David Thomas as the beacon and constant element, the band from Cleveland make it very clear through the motto that presides their encyclopedic website: “Ars longa, spectatores fugaces” (Art remains, the public comes and goes). A statement of intention that has governed their monumental career, and which explains the unprejudiced open style of a discourse that, despite allowing numerous labels, could be summed up as art punk rock, or, to be fairer, rock á la Pere Ubu.
