The sound of ‘60s pop arrives with the Californian Mikal Cronin, who will present the second record of his career, “MCII”, within SON Estrella Galicia, on the 29 July in the Sala El Sol (Madrid) alongside His Majesty the King.
It’s an album that fearlessly sticks its fingers in the socket of effervescent pop. It was recorded in San Francisco and has Cronin playing almost all the instruments (except the odd collaboration, like with Ty Segall who does two guitar solos). It’s been composed on a piano, finding inspiration in Elliot Smith and the latest Bill Fay records in order that his songs, which speak about growing up in the 21st century, sound more arranged and thought-out than his eponymous debut from 2011, a project which launched him to the top of a number of “the best of the year” lists (for example the “Uncut” list).
Mikal already showed his love for ‘60s pop, for example T.Rex and The Beatles, but doesn’t want his melodies to be affected reconstructions of the period, he prefers to rip the flesh off them and twist them with his boost of youthful energy. Besides Segall, Three Oh Sees also collaborated on his debut. They’re names that he shares DNA, attitude, and presence with on the garage revival scene.
Those who saw him on his first visit to these lands in 2011 will know that in this SON Estrella Galicia concert the Californian will deliver adrenaline and will release tension, accompanied by a band who is committed to the cause.
His Majesty the King has just released its second, and eponymous record. On this long awaited record, recorded in “El Lado Izquierdo” (Wild Honey, Jeo Romero, Julio de la Rosa, etc) by Manuel Cabezalí (Havalina, Pasajero, Rufus T.Firefly), the band’s characteristic elements such as a passion for noise or melodies inspired by ‘90s bands are present as well as their lyrics; full of rage, humour, sweetness, and anger in the same measure, but that also surprise due to a much more ambitious production, full of details, with three tracks in Spanish and a huge range of registers.
