After two intense days of competition, the Estrella Galicia Gourmetapa, the Spanish Tapas for Gourmets Contest, came to a close with Jorge Bosch Barrera, La Bola Gastrobar (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) chef, being proclaimed winner. His winning proposal was Red Vintage vs Black Pig, black Canary Island pig cheeks with potatoes from Lanzarote in a perfect pairing with 1906 Red Vintage.
In addition, the contest awarded two runner-up prizes to Jorge Soli, cook at the Ciudadela (Gijón) who made “Purito de Rabo” with Boletus Brandy, paired with Red Vintage, and to Javier Tornero Belmonte, cooking teacher at Belerma Secondary School in Ossa de Montiel, Albacete, with his proposal of “Trampantojo de Esparrago Blanco” (White Asparagus Tromp-l’oeil) paired with 1906 Red Vintage.
25 participants from different regions of Spain took part in the contest to create different types of tapas, with the requirement of highlighting the importance of nationally cultivated olive oil and the pairing of the dishes with Hijos de Rivera beers.
The Salon de Gourmets 2014 opened its doors last Monday in Madrid as a fine food and gastronomy event of national and international reference. For the second year running, Estrella Galicia has been the official beer at the event.
