12miradas::Riverside has opened registration for the architecture and stage design workshop which will take place on 20 and 21 October in Ribeira Sacra, following the talk that the artist will offer on 18 October at the Galería Vilaseco in A Coruña.
The architect and stage designer João Mendes Ribeiro will present his 12 gazes
João Mendes Ribeiro will delve into the connections between architecture and stage design as part of the Ciclo 12miradas::Riverside. As an architect who works with the scenic arts, he will be presenting his particular 12 gazes on 18 October at the Galería Vilaseco.
The creator will also live alongside 12 students, awarded grants from the Corporación Hijos de Rivera and Laboratorio Creativo Vilaseco, in the Ribeira Sacra for the weekend of the 21 and 21 October. The workshop will be held at the facilities of Custom Drinks and Boánuno (Chantada), as well as in different areas of the Ribeira Sacra.

João Mendes Ribeiro
Coimbra, 1960
Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Porto University, where he also taught from 1989 to 1991. He obtained his PhD from the University of Coimbra in 2009, in the field of Theory and History of Architecture. He has also been a teacher of architectural design at the Department of Architecture of the Science and Technology Faculty of the University of Coimbra since 1991, where he was assistant to the professor and architect Fernando Távora from 1991 and 1998.
His work has been widely published, both nationally and internationally in countries such as Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, South Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the USA. Six monographs have been published about his work: João Mendes Ribeiro, “Obras y Projectos” 1996-1903 (ASA, 2003), “Stop and Start Again”Arquitectura e Cenografia” (XM,2004), “Arquitecturas em Palco” (Instituto das Artes/Almedina, 2007), João Mendes Ribeiro, in the “Arquitectos Portugueses”collection (Quidnovi, 2011) and “João Mendes Ribeiro, Projectos”, Archinews 34 (Archi yBook’s, 2016).
He has featured in a large number of national and international exhibitions including the Portuguese representation at the 9th and 10th Biennale di Venezia, in 2004 and 2006; the 11thPrague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space, in 2007; and the 7thBienal de Arquitetura of Sao Paulo, in 2007.
His work has received national and international awards, such as the Premio Architecti 1997 and 2000, Lisboa; honourable mention at the AR prizes for Emerging Architecture, London, 2000; the Diogo de Castilho prize in 2003, 2007 and 2011, Coimbra; FAD de Arquitectura i Interiorisme award in 2004, Barcelona; AICA prize in 2007; Medalla de Oro (Golden Medal) for Best Scenography; 11 Scenography and theatre architecture- Praga Quadrennial 2007, Prague; Iberoamerican Architecture and Urbanism Bienal VIII BIAU 2012 (Cádiz) and X BIAU 2016 (Sao Paulo); as well as being nominated for the European Union Contemporary Architecture Award – Mies Van der Rohe Prize 2001, 2005, 2011, 2013 and 2015, Barcelona, and he was a finalist in the Iberoamerican Architecture and Civil Engineering Biennial, in 2000 and 2004 (Mexico City and Lima); the FAD Prizes1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2012 and 2016 (Barcelona); the Enor Prizes 2009, 2011 and 2014 (Vigo); the Premio Nacional de Arquitectura en Madera -PNAM 2013,Lisbon and a the IHRU 2015 Prizes.
He received, in 2007, the AICA Award for the Visual Arts and Architecture from the Asociación Internacional de Críticos de Arte (International Art Critics Association) and the Ministerio de Cultura de Portugal (Culture Ministry of Portugal), for all his work. In 2006 he was awarded the Comenda da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique by the President of Portugal.
