Jason Lindner Now vs Now, jazz from the Big Apple

The second VII Ciclo 1906 de Jazz session- the Jason Lindner Now vs Now concert- will be held at Jazz Filloa in A Coruña.  The emblematic club hosted the Albert Vila Quartet concert last week and will welcome Atomic on the 10th of April.

Jason Lindner is perhaps the best example of the effervescence and cultural mixes in New York.  Brought up on the streets of Brooklyn, at an early stage he combined piano, guitar, sax, flute, bass, and drum lessons with the experience at Smalls club, where he grew night after night.  It’s there that jazz is mixed with sights set on the Big Apple, and undoubtedly it was the right place to start up the fantastic big band Jazz Underground, with who he would accomplish his first recording for the GRP label.

The artist’s headline quote is very simple, but it torpedoes the waterline of orthodox jazz, “No single type of music is more important than another.” Following that maxim to the letter, his music feeds off Latin jazz, hip hop, electronic music, bebop… taking the modern sense of the word “fusion” to the extreme.  It is precisely Chick Chorea, one of the pioneers of that elimination of borders in the 70s, who was his guardian, but he can also be heard alongside a great variety of musicians, from the Marsalis brothers to Lauryn Hill.

His latest project, Earth Analog (2013), is his second track with his ensemble Now vs. Now, a trio with which he recovers the sound of the Fender Rhodes and the 70s synthesisers. His compositions are a real box of surprises, an amalgam of rhythms and styles that define the path that jazz is taking.
