On Saturday, at the former naval base of the ETEA in Vigo, the baptism of the new rowing lake, which aims to make Vigo an attractive location for future international events, will take place. The inauguration will take the shape of the Cabreiroá Vigo Rowing Cup- Gran Premio Deputacion de Pontevedra, and it is organised by the Federacion Gallega de Remo and the Club Maritimo de Vigo, and has the backing of the Club de Remo de Chapela, Marinetea, and the Canido and Punta Lagoa yacht clubs, which have offered the organisation the use of all their logistic means.
The event aims to be the precursor to the important dates that will put the city of Vigo on the map for fixed seat rowing. There is great expectation with regards to how the boats will respond in the waters of the Teis inlet, and it is thought that the lake can offer sufficient guarantees to hold an important event in the near future. The lake will be set up by the Club de Remo de Chapela ready for the exhibition event at four o’clock, with the spectacular jewels in the rowing crown, the 17 metre long outrigger eights. The skiff (8 metres), double scull (10 metres) and the 4 (13 metres) will also take part. 20 boats have confirmed their attendance, with boats from Asturias, Galicia and Portugal, with the stand out clubs from Galicia being Club de Remo de Miño (current eights Iberian Champion), Tirán, Samertolameu, Ria de Marin and Mar de Bueu amongst others. Representing Asturias, its best rowers, Remeros del Eo de Vegadeo and representing Portugal, Caminhense. The races will begin at 4pm, under the direction of Manuel Seijas of the Federacion Gallega de Remo, which is headed by Jose Prada, and Franco Cobas who will be in charge of the referees and judges.
On Sunday from 11am the skiffs enter into competition in the under 13, under 15 and women’s categories, with 150 young athletes and 30 boats, which will undoubtedly be a great sight. For now the following clubs have confirmed their attendance: Mar de Bueu, Meira, Tirán, Samertolameu, Chapela, Ría de Marín and Vilaxoan. A great atmosphere is expected in this Cabreiroa de Remo, which aims to be the first corner stone for international and university events on a European level.
