On Wednesday 19 March the VII edition of the 1906 Jazz Season begins at Jazz Filloa in A Coruña with the Albert Vila Quartet concert. The emblematic Coruña club will hold three of the concerts in the Season, the second being Jason Lindner “Now vs. Now” on March 26, and Atomic on April 10.
Most artists that have triumphed abroad at some stage return to demonstrate that they can be prophets in their own land. Barcelona welcomes with open arms, and a great following, a guitarist who, after having started in the Taller de Musics, gained experience in Amsterdam and in 2004 won an award for the best composition in the Dutch Jazz Competition. This composition would be part of his debut album as leader of Foreground Music three years later. Meanwhile, he continued his training in New York, but it was in the Dutch city where he could take part in workshops with Metheny, Scofield, and Rosenwinkel, three major references of modern guitar music. The influence of the latter is clear in Vila’s cutting, bop phrasing, but also in his facet as a composer, undoubtedly one of the strengths of his talent. Although he feels very comfortable working with standards (as “Moments”, his duet with Clara Luna, and the recent “Standards”, as a trio, demonstrate), Vila focuses on compositions that respect the language of jazz but have their feet firmly in the present.
Albert Vila: Guitar
Roger Mas: Piano
Rai Ferrer: Double bass
David Xirgu: Drums
