Our Asturian water brand announces that it will begin to produce all its formats using recycled plastic (rPET), allowing it to give new life to over 66 million bottles and reduce the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process of these containers by 72%.
The measure, part of the company’s positive impact strategy that began with the Carbon Neutral project in our springs, represents a new milestone in the process started in 2018 for the implementation of this type of materials and mobilizes the brand in the search for new circular formats.
Our Asturian water brand Agua de Cuevas has announced that it will start manufacturing all its bottles with 100% recycled plastic (rPET) before the end of the year. The use of these recycled and recyclable materials will give a new lease of life to more than 66 million bottles, which will reduce the carbon footprint from the manufacturing process of these containers by 72% and avoid the extraction of more than 1,100 tons of crude oil, a sign of the company’s commitment to the planet and its commitment to the circular economy.
In mid-2020, the brand launched its 1.5-litre bottle, the best seller, in a bottle of 100% recycled material, a key step for the progressive evolution of all its formats towards rPET. The process is now completed with its extension to the rest of the bottles, an important energy saving, allowing to drastically reduce emissions and promote circularity in the use of the resources used for the manufacture of each bottle.
The water brand, of recognized prestige and roots in Asturias since its beginnings in 1994, has implemented the use of recycled rPET progressively in its bottles since 2018, as part of the environmental commitments made in all the mineral water plants managed by Hijos de Rivera. The spring, from the Asturian mountain of San Isidro, also has the Carbon Neutral certification, proof of its commitment to the protection of the environment in which it carries out its activity.
This important milestone in terms of sustainability will mean the definitive implementation of recycled and recyclable formats in all packaging marketed by the brand, making it the first Asturian natural mineral water brand to develop this, in addition to announcing that it will continue working to innovate in materials that are increasingly circular.
“At Agua de Cuevas we have been committed for many years to the implementation of measures that help conserve the planet, and the circularity of packaging is a key way to achieve this. Using recycled and recyclable materials is one of our priority objectives, so achieving the implementation of 100% rPET in our bottles is a milestone that pushes us to continue improving our sustainable ambition” says Álvaro García de Quevedo, Director of the Hijos de Rivera Mineral Water Business.
The use of recycled plastic in all bottles and the rest of the actions aimed at fighting the climate emergency are framed in the positive impact strategy of Hijos de Rivera, extendable to all its brands, a sustainability strategy that unites the care of the planet and people, the protection of its origin and the joint work with its allies. Thus, we emphasize our commitment in the search for new solutions that allow us to promote the circular economy, key to the present and future preservation of the planet.
