30 participants will be taking part in the Estrella Galicia Beer Pulling Championship in Castilla y León which will be held on Monday, 2 March from 10.30am in the former auditorium of the Parador San Marcos in León and which is open to the general public.
Among the aspirants, there is bar staff representing the 5 different areas of the region, Burgos, León, Palencia, Segovia and Valladolid, such as Miguel Ángel Rodríguez from the wine bar La Bienquerida (León), Alexandre Álvarez from the restaurant Zuloaga (León), Roberto Mieres from the coffee-bar Espolón (León), José Alberto Rodríguez from the bar Fact4 (Burgos), Jesús Valentín Aguado from Piru´s Tasting (Valladolid), Marcelino Navajo from Taberna El Reloj-Tati (Segovia) or Josué Nestar from the Restaurant Las Cavas (Palencia), among many more.
The Estrella Galicia Beer Pulling Championship is a regional phase, allowing the winner to challenge for the national title at the final to be held in Madrid in April within the Salón de Gourmets. The Castilla y León Champion and Runner-up will represent the region in the national contest.
The contest in Leon will begin at 10.30am, and from 12pm midday the grand final will take place. The five finalists will win their own weight in beer. The winner will win a cash prize of €600, and the runner-up €400. There will also be three consolation prizes of €150. All the finalists will be given a certificate of participation, while the champion and runner-up will go directly through to the National Championship, with paid travel and accommodation costs.
Estrella Galicia rewards professionalism and quality when serving beer.
The jury, made up of professionals from the beer, catering and restaurant sectors, will be evaluating the aspirants’ quality and excellence when serving, as well as their knowledge about beer. The jury is made up of Daniel Giganto, winner of the first Estrella Galicia Beer Pulling Championship and owner of the restaurant Amancio (León); Oscar Quintana Negreira, maître-sommelier of the Parador de Turismo of León; and Xabier Cubillo de la Hoz and Fernando Iglesias Quiroga, both from the Quality Department of Hijos de Rivera. They will evaluate each exercise, awarding points according to previously established parameters, for style and technique, degree of perfection when carrying out the task and the final presentation.
The objective of the championship is to promote brewery tradition and culture, the value of beer as a product of excellence within the food and beverage sector, and to acknowledge the work carried out by bartenders as an essential link in the distribution chain of Estrella Galicia products. Professionalism when serving in catering establishments is fundamental in order to offer the end consumer the full range of possibilities offered by a premium beer such as Estrella Galicia.
